Letting Go Of The Past
Could 3 Simple Questions Hold The Key?

3 Questions For Letting Go Of The Past: Hope Wynns, June 2008

Looking back on something that has happened in the past often either energizes or de-energizes us.

If it is good, the thought or memory can create a positive or uplifting feeling. Giving us energy or good vibes.

But if the thought or memory was not positive, it can drain us of energy, make us dwell on the past, relive the situation again in our mind over and over again.

Life is at best short – so why would we allow these thoughts to steal our precious time and drain our energy?  It's time to start looking at letting go of the past.  But the question is how?

Denis Waitley has a saying which goes like this:

“Everything that is past is either a learning experience to grow on, a beautiful memory to reflect on, or a motivating factor to act upon.”

But that quote has so much meaning that can be missed on first reading.  It really is a key to letting go of the past, setting yourself free, opening yourself to learn, grow and act.

I had to read it several times to truly understand its meaning.

Another way to look at that quote is to make it into a series of questions.

About your past experience..

·         Is it a learning experience to grow from?

·         Is it a beautiful memory to reflect on?

·         Is it a motivating factor to act upon?

Usually the experience is tied into relationships with other people.  Things they might have said or done, or things I might have said or done.

By asking this simple series of questions I have found that this can totally eliminate the negative aspects of the thought. Putting it in its box once and for all, so I can move on.

Give it a try…

Press the PAUSE Button and Ask:

1.      Is it a beautiful memory?

2.      Is it something I can learn from to become a better person?

3.      Is it something I can use to motivate me to act?

Denis Waitley seems to have a knack of taking the stuff that we battle with in our heads and making it seem so simple to fix.
